Essential Security Software - Best Deployment Scenario - Email Rights Management

The Jacobsen Publishing Company

Background: Since 1865, The Jacobsen has been recognized as the most insightful and accurate resource for commentary and daily spot market prices for the agricultural by-products industry. Their experience and market coverage has earned the trust of the industry. The Jacobsen is uniquely able to provide a trader's perspective without the bias that comes from having a market position.

The Jacobsen is able to take advantage of advances in technology to efficiently monitor market activity and collect perspectives from across the country, and has efficiently expanded the subscriber base internationally in time with the emerging global economy. Recently, The Jacobsen has focused more attention on serving the needs of the bio-energy industry and has incorporated data from the Department of Energy with its own historical archives to develop relevant comparison charts. The Jacobsen's foray onto the Internet is simply another step in the company's evolution, a continuation of a 135-year old legacy of objectivity and accuracy.

Challenges: The Jacobsen Publishing Company is comprised of domestic offices located all over the United States, with an international customer base of approximately 2,000 subscribers. From these offices, The Jacobsen provides research and industry reports to subscriber companies that are impacted by the Feed, Cattle and Agricultural Industry. These companies range from automobile companies that need leather for cars, to meat processing plants. Recently, The Jacobsen began using the power of the internet to serve their constituents by publishing bulletins on the company’s website as well as offering an email report to paid subscribers. These subscribers receive daily or/and weekly unbiased reports via email, addressing their respective markets with information on price quotes that can be used as benchmarks for long term contracts on animal proteins, fats and hides.

The challenge that The Jacobsen had been experiencing is that these reports are sent to paid subscribers, and unknowingly, some subscribers were forwarding the reports to un-subscribed readers. The Jacobsen did not have a way to control leakage of their reports to non-subscribers.

Technology

“Taceo has solved a significant business problem for us as we encountered situations where parties were forwarding our market reports, which are proprietary information that we make available to subscribers only.  Now, with Taceo, we can control these issues as it allows us to maintain control of our email and files and prevent misdirection and misuse with a simple click of the button. Taceo has already provided us a return on our time and investment, as parties who were receiving the reports illegally are now subscribing to our reports.”

Ken Maxfield, managing editor of The Jacobsen Publishing Company

Issues: The Jacobsen had been losing an estimated $10,000 in potential subscriber revenue per year due to unauthorized forwarding of reports that were meant only for paid subscribers. Whether accidentally or intentionally forwarding received reports, subscribers had no restrictions on what they could or could not do with the reports provided by The Jacobsen, causing The Jacobsen loss of control over their intellectual property.  In addition to revenue loss, competitors within the field were also able to access intellectual property owned by The Jacobsen.

Essential Security

Solution provided by Essential Security: The Jacobsen discovered Essential Taceo™ as the ideal solution to control their loss of intellectual property from unauthorized forwarding of email contents. Taceo is a user friendly e-mail and document security solution that integrates with the Microsoft® Outlook® toolbar, giving users the power to apply transit protection and usage controls to e-mail content.  Taceo allows The Jacobsen to determine how recipients may use their e-mail newsletters and reports. For example, The Jacobsen can now prevent unauthorized distribution (no forwarding, printing) and prevent unauthorized editing (no cut, copy, paste) of content. In addition, The Jacobsen can set expiration times and dates on e-mail and documents, as well as set usage permissions that evolve with time.

Taceo provides 1024bit RSA asymmetric encryption and 192bit 3-DES encryption. Taceo’s persistent security and control remains for the life-cycle of the e-mail while in storage, transit, and after it has arrived on the recipient’s desktop.

Taceo provided the solution that The Jacobsen desired by preventing email recipients from forwarding the proprietary content of their subscriber reports to non-subscribed users. By using Taceo’s usage and rights enforcement features, The Jacobsen can authorize only those on their subscriber lists to be able to access email content.  Taceo was attractive to The Jacobsen because of its ease of use and the low cost of $59.00 per user license, which made it a simple, practical solution that fit their operating budget.

“The prevalence of data leakage is driving demand for stronger measures to protect confidential information. Until now, solutions for encryption and data control have not been accessible to most businesses, due to complexity and cost. We’re very pleased to offer the market an easy to use, affordable solution that meets the needs of businesses of all sizes.”

Summary:
The Jacobsen performed an initial trial by sending a report protected with Taceo to 150 subscribers. Within the first week of Essential Taceo’s deployment, The Jacobsen was able to convert many users that previously received the reports illegally, to paid subscribers. Access to reports by competitors was also denied.
