InfoExpress - Best Deployment Scenario - Software Network Access Control

Ulster Savings Bank

Background: Established in 1851, Ulster Savings Bank has over 20 locations throughout New York State.  The bank offers an extensive array of products and services from savings and checking to financial planning and insurance, the bank’s products are designed to fit people’s lives no matter what stage they are in.  Ulster Savings Bank also owns and operates USB Agency Tax & Financial Services and Ryan Insurance.  In total, Ulster Savings Bank employs over 350 people and manages over $625 million in assets.

Challenges: Every year Ulster Savings Bank hires a third party company to evaluate its network security systems to find flaws and shortcomings.  In 2005, the third party conducted port scans and hung “sniffers” on the network that simulate malicious activity while monitoring how well the network responds.  Software patch levels on the network machines were also tested using this method.

Ulster Savings learned that their security measures were rock solid when defending attacks from outside the network.  However, the bank discovered that the same tests conducted from inside the corporate network were not as encouraging, and that adding policy enforcement solution would be a necessary step to ensure the bank’s network security.  Ulster Savings thereby realized that they needed a comprehensive solution that included internal intrusion detection and policy enforcement.
With over 350 employees throughout 20 locations in New York State, the bank needed to find a solution that would help secure its network from internal threats and ensure that every machine on Ulster’s network was compliant with corporate security policies.

Technology

"With InfoExpress’ CyberGatekeeper integrated into our network, we have created a superior level of network security and visibility. CyberGatekeeper gives us the ability to verify that every machine talking to our network is compliant and allows us to avoid dangerous rogue machines that can get in and damage corporate assets.”

Jim Hochstatter, vice president of technology, Ulster Savings Bank

Issues: Ulster Savings Bank needed the ability to effectively monitor the network and to verify that every machine talking to its network was compliant with corporate security policies.  Rogue machines that were not compliant needed to be quarantined before they could get into the network and cause any damage.

The bank also needed the ability to administer software patches to outside machines to make them compliant with corporate policies and to monitor patch levels to ensure that every machine connecting to Ulster’s network is approved.

Solution provided by InfoExpress: Ulster chose InfoExpress’s CyberGatekeeper product to enforce security policies by auditing all systems before granting access to the network.  Once integrated into the Ulster’s network, it created a superior level of network security and visibility for the company.

CyberGatekeeper gave Ulster the ability to verify that every machine talking to its network was compliant and allowed the bank to avoid dangerous rogue machines connecting to the network by quarantining them until they were compliant.

Ulster Savings Bank is utilizing InfoExpress’ CyberGatekeeper to:

  • Grant network access only to compliant endpoints
  • Quarantine rogue endpoints
  • Monitor Network Activity
  • Administer software patches and monitor patch levels throughout the network
  • Ensure that every machine connecting to their network has been approved

Summary:
Ulster Savings Bank is now protected from internal threats thanks to InfoExpress.  CyberGatekeeper gives Ulster the ability to know that its customer’s personal information is safe from both internal and external threats.  The ability to easily and efficiently scale security policy enforcement to new employees in new locations is especially helpful as the bank continues to grow.
