Hong Kong's Largest Service Provider brings Spam under Control
Background: Hong-Kong largest service provider is a pioneer in providing Internet services to businesses and residential markets since 1994. This customer has eight years of solid Internet expertise and experience in local markets, and is backed by a strong, global Tier 1 network—making it an ideal business partner for companies in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific, as well as a gateway to mainland China. The company offers a wide range of IP-related solutions including IP connectivity (such as dedicated leased line, 56K dial-up and broadband services), IP-VPN services, security solutions, facility/data center management, web hosting and design, system integration, database hosting/streaming services, IP transit services, virtual ISP and domain name registration services.
Challenges: The company has approximately 200 employees in Hong Kong, providing email hosting services to 50,000 users. Their email servers are located in their own data center in Hong Kong. They also provide co-location services to corporate users to host their own dedicated email servers. Before the Mirapoint system was installed, email users were being overwhelmed by spam in their inboxes. The previous solution had low catch-rates, requiring users to spend much of their time cleaning up their own mailboxes. In addition, the previous solution did not provide group content filtering so domain hosting customers could not apply any required company-specific policies. Moreover, their previous anti-virus and anti-spam engines did not provide high performance scanning.

Issues: Before the Mirapoint solution was installed, the customer was using an anti-spam engine with a much lower catch rate. Also, because there was no per-user quarantine for users’ junk mail, all junk mail was delivered to the back-end mail servers, creating an extra burden to the mail servers. Another issue was the inability to enforce policies on a per-domain basis.

Solution provided by Mirapoint: Using two Mirapoint Message Servers, (M4500N), this Hong-Kong based service provider can offer hosted email and email security services to their 50,000 corporate customers. The two Mirapoint servers are running in HA (High Availability) mode where automatic failover will occur if the active server is not responding. This provides extra reliability on top of Mirapoint’s existing 99.999% uptime reliability. The service provider also offers delegated security administration and Junk Mail Manager (JMM) services per domain, a feature which is both unique and innovative in the marketplace. Each domain can have one or more users acting as the domain administrator. The domain administrator can easily create/modify user accounts or content filters, and can white/black list within their own domain.

Summary: After the installation is complete, all incoming emails will first pass through a Mirapoint Message Server appliance for anti-spam and anti-virus scanning. Any emails classified as spam will be quarantined. Depending on their messaging needs, customers can purchase disk storage to host their quarantine mailbox on the Mirapoint appliance. This creates a new revenue-generating opportunity for the customer, while providing a reliable email and email security hosting service to their customers.
