Changing business models and role-based access control to internal networks

As enterprise business models have evolved, the need to open the network and provision on-demand services for employees and third parties such as contractors, partners, auditors and guests has increased. Conversely, increasing government regulation, concerns over data integrity and unauthorized access to sensitive and valuable data, and the growing threat to network availability from malicious sources all have promoted the need for more granular visibility as well as tighter security and control. These new conditions have created an undesirable mismatch between the complexity of business needs and the capabilities of existing security technologies.

In the following interview, Shane Buckley, Chief Operating Officer of Nevis Networks discusses with Rake Narang, Editor-in-chief of Info Security Products Guide, the dissapearing enterprise perimeter, changing business models, sophisticated malware and the importance of role-based access control to internal networks.

Rake Narang, Chief Editor - Info Security Products Guide: Does an enterprise perimeter actually exist today or have the boundaries been totally eroded by the changing business models and access? Why do CIOs and CISOs need to take a broader approach to this problem?

Shane Buckley, Chief Operating Officer - Nevis Networks:
In the past, the enterprise perimeter was the  primary line of defense for preventing the spread of malware (keeping the bad stuff off the network) and preventing unauthorized users from accessing the network (keeping the good stuff on the network!). The 21st century has ushered in an era of increased collaboration between companies. Organizations are outsourcing and partnering more than ever before. The use of contractors, temporary workers and other ‘non-employees’ is at an all time high. Malware has become vastly more sophisticated and can target key assets inside the network due the effect of the ‘Briefcase bypass’ (legitimate mobile users walking through the front door, bypassing perimeter defenses). Given these business trends, it is true to say the perimeter has disappeared and that the LAN has become the new DMZ.  CIOs & CISOs need to support the business needs of their enterprises by providing role-based access control to internal networks for employees and non-employees alike, while ensuring compliance to relevant regulations, the protection of critical assets and preventing the spread of malware.

"Globalization and advancements in information technology are rapidly changing conventional business models. In business, strategies that worked three years ago may not work any more today. There is greater external participant in such organizations today making yesterday’s defenses obsolete or redundant. Nevis Networks solves these issues with products and solutions that encourage role-based access control."

Nevis Networks
The Nevis LANenforcer™ family of enterprise-class LAN security systems

Rake Narang:
How has Nevis Networks kept up with innovation? What is the secret behind the products and services provided by your company? How is your company focusing on 2008 growth?

Shane Buckley:
Nevis Networks is unique in the development of products to tackle the LAN security problems described above. Nevis spent four years developing the highest performance security ASIC the market has seen. This piece of silicon is the foundation for our LANenforcer Secure Switch and LAN Security appliance products.  Nevis’ LANenforcer solutions deliver LAN IPS, Traffic Anomaly Detection, Application Visualization and identity-based firewall at 10Gbps, making them the fastest security solutions in the marketplace. Why is this important? Well, LANs have two key requirements: they must run very fast and they must be low cost. Nevis LANenforcers deliver line rate LAN security from $15 per user. This unique price/performance allows Nevis to deliver ubiquitous LAN security at a price no other similar vendor can match.

Rake Narang: Will the security vendors always be playing a catch-up game with hackers and attackers? How do you see the security products evolving 2-3 years from today?

Shane Buckley:
Malware has become more targeted and evasive in the last 3-5 years. Gartner believes that by year-end 75% of enterprises "will be infected with undetected, financially motivated, targeted malware that evaded traditional perimeter and host defenses”. Clearly enterprises need to step-up their defenses. Nevis believes the solution to this threat is to make every switch port secure. Providing a Personal DMZ™ per user will limit the spread of malware and will ensure users only have access to resources that are approved, based on their role in the organization. Over the next 3-5 years, mainstream switching vendors will realize that security in the LAN switch is the only way to control this epidemic problem. In the meantime, Nevis’ secure switches are already providing significant risk mitigation and value for organizations who have carved out budget for switch refreshes and upgrades.  In addition the Nevis LAN Security appliance provides a similar level of security for customers who are not ready or able to replace any switches in the enterprise.
