In the following interview, Andrew Grygiel, Senior Vice President Global Marketing, Orchestria discusses 1:1 with Rake Narang, Editor-n-chief of Info Security Products Guide, the common causes of data losses and how to control information more securely.

Rake Narang, Editor-n-Chief - Info Security Products Guide: What are the common causes of data losses in organizations? What is making it difficult for organizations to bring greater control? What is Intelligent Electronic Control and how can this prevent data losses?

Andrew Grygiel, Senior Vice President Global Marketing - Orchestria: By far the most common cause of data loss is an inadvertent breach caused by an authorized insider. One seemingly innocent misguided email can cost an organization millions of dollars, result in loss of consumer trust, affect customer retention and significantly damage a brand and reputation.  Information is an organization’s most valuable asset but the challenges of protecting and controlling it continue to increase. For breaches which are inadvertent and non-malicious there is not a motive, just means and opportunity. Most corporate information exists in some type of electronic format and is accessible to most employees, creating the “opportunity”. Means emerges from the plethora of vehicles and routes through which data can exit an organization - for example email, IM, blogs, data saved/copied to USB devices, etc.  Protecting and controlling this information without interfering with the normal course of business is the challenge that all organizations face.

Intelligent Electronic Control is our way of describing the capabilities required to not only prevent data loss but also mitigate risks associated with violations of corporate policy, code of conduct, and code of ethics.  Orchestria works in real time to accurately detect policy violations before a message or file is sent, a web transaction is completed, a file is saved, or a document is printed.  In summary Orchestria’s software and services help organizations protect and control information wherever it is stored or used.

"Data losses can be prevented to a large extent. Orchestria solutions provide better control over information helping take a proactive approach in securing your digital resources."

Rake Narang, Editor-n-Chief, Info Security Products Guide

Rake Narang: What are the latest products and services provided by Orchestria? How are Orchestria solutions different from others?

Andrew Grygiel: Orchestria version 5.0 is our latest product.  Orchestria 5.0 protects an organization from all forms of risks in electronic activity by detecting and taking action on the true violations that occur in an enterprise.  Orchestria can monitor for and detect these violations in many "channels" including email, IM, Web use, mobile mail, FTP, file repositories, endpoint activity and other forms.  Once a violation is detected, Orchestria can take the appropriate action - such as blocking the activity, presenting a warning, quarantining the event, alerting a supervisor, etc.  Among the key capabilities of Orchestria 5.0 are:

  1. Coverage – Orchestria provides control and protection across all information channels and control points, including internal/external e-mail, instant messaging, webmail, blogs, disconnected laptops, and removable media.
  2. Detection – Powered by more than 200 pre-built, highly precise policies, Orchestria works in real time to accurately detect policy violations before a message or file is sent, a web transaction is completed, a file is saved, or a document is printed.
  3. Action – Orchestria proactively protects and controls information in real time by matching responses specifically to the type and severity of the violation.  Orchestria supports a variety of actions, including block, correct, embed, inform, quarantine, and classify.

Our solution is different from others in its ability to effectively mitigate the broadest set of risks at the least possible cost.

Rake Narang: Will the security vendors always be playing a catch-up game with malware? How do you see the security products and services evolving 2-3 years from today?

Andrew Grygiel:
I do feel that security vendors will always be playing a “cat and mouse” game with malicious outsiders trying to infiltrate computer systems and networks.  Although organizations will always need to be vigilant in their efforts to protect the “outside” threat many believe that the greater security risk is the insider threat. Much of that threat is not malicious but inadvertent.
