Rake Narang: How has the gateway security market progressed from legacy firewall, to next generation firewall, to unified threat management, and what is the benefit to business?
Joe Wang: Unified Threat Management (UTM) is one of the fastest growing categories in the network security market for four key reasons. One, network security is complex and UTM simplifies the process by consolidating key security functions into a single solution that can be managed on a single pane of glass. Two, that consolidation of features reduces capital and labor costs by an estimated 50 percent for the average-sized distributed enterprise. Three, there is a deep IT talent shortage, and a UTM solution requires a smaller headcount to manage. And four, and most important, today’s threat landscape requires a blended security solution that includes not only basic firewall packet filtering, but also technologies such as deep packet inspection and/or proxies, intrusion prevention and anti-virus, which are critical in catching modern malware's multi-vectored threats.
About Joe Wang
Joe Wang, CEO of WatchGuard Technologies, has a proven track record of growing businesses and generating tremendous returns during his 20 years in the high technology marketplace. Prior to joining WatchGuard, Wang was the CEO of LANDesk Software, an Intel spin-off, where he grew the company by 150% in four years. He successfully sold LANDesk Software for more than $400m, generating significant returns for shareholders. Prior to LANDesk, Wang was vice president and general manager of Symantec's Enterprise Administration Division, a business unit with $230m in annual sales. Before joining Symantec, Wang was CEO of 20/20 Software. He built the company from conception to a growing and profitable business and ultimately championed its successful acquisition. Wang has an M.A. in Communication Management from University of Southern California, an M.S. in MIS from People's University of China, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Beijing University.
Rake Narang: The security market is changing so fast, how can an organization protect their firewall or UTM investment?
Joe Wang: The market is changing fast and it’s critical that companies choose solutions that can change and grow with them. IT managers need to make sure that the solutions they use have the performance capacity to not only protect their networks with the full UTM suite turned on, and without slowing down the network, but that also have the performance “headroom” to add other security features like DLP without having to add additional units or change vendors.
In making that purchase, decision makers should look not at the speed of basic firewall packet filtering, but rather at the speed of the device when all deep packet inspection and/or proxies, intrusion prevention and anti-virus engines are turned on to ensure that they are truly choosing a solution that will meet their network performance needs.
Rake Narang: With the network perimeter expanding with remote offices, home users, mobiles devices and more, how do organizations ensure the corporate network stays secure and productive?
Joe Wang: That is a major issue and today’s corporate networks have absolutely ‘re-perimiterized’ to include home offices. People are your perimeter now. And, with 70 percent of a corporation’s high-value employees working from home regularly, home offices now need enterprise-level protection, since these employees also tend to hold a company’s most valuable asset, which is IP. VPN technology is not enough and only secures the communications tunnel, not the device itself, and creates tremendous vulnerabilities for today’s home-based employees. IT managers need to make sure that they are taking advantage of emerging enterprise-level solutions that are designed for that home office/small office environment and that help the organization protect where it connects.
Rake Narang: WatchGuard seems to be gaining some market momentum with its new Dimension visibility solution, why do you think that is? What do customers like about this free tool?
Joe Wang: The market response to WatchGuard Dimension has been tremendous. The key driver is simple: real time security intelligence. Dimension instantly distills oceans of log data into the thimbleful of information that’s really important. This is a game changer in the market, given that until now, only 10 percent of security professionals say they feel confident in their ability to spot security trends even though 77 percent are collecting data regularly. Tools like Dimension give businesses immediate access to network insights that help shed light on trends and issues facing the organization. This in turn allows them to better set policies based on how employees are actually behaving on their networks. You don’t know what to enforce until you have visibility into the data.
