Blind Faith: Executives Rely on Incomplete Solutions, Organizations Vulnerable to Private and Confidential Leaks
Current Scenario: The objective of the “Blind Faith: Executives Rely on Incomplete Solutions, Organizations Vulnerable to private and Confidential Information Leaks” white paper was to gather insight from potential and existing Workshare Protect Enterprise Suite customers regarding challenges they face protecting organizational information considered confidential, financial or private customer data. The majority of corporations and government agencies in North America have no idea how much sensitive data is leaking out of their organi zations. Worse, they have no automated standard of care for detecting and preventing leaks or educating personnel on information security polices, according to a new study. This lack of awareness and action exists despite an understanding of how such leaks put brand reputation and customer loyalty at risk.
Tomorrow's Technology Today: “Blind Faith: Executives Rely on Incomplete Solutions, Organizations Vulnerable to private and Confidential Information Leaks” reveals a significant lack of information and awareness about the level of risk in these organizations. For example: 94 percent of respondents reported having no visibility into how many email messages containing confidential or private information were leaving their organization each month or believed that some leaks were occurring. Only 6 percent reported no information leaks. 80 percent of participants reported having information leaks—through email or other electronic channels such as Blackberrys or HTTP postings—or admitted to no visibility to leaks that occurred within their organization last year. Of those, 17 percent were afraid to know how many leaks they had. More than 70 percent now believe PDF does not secure information, a growing trend from a recent rash of publicized information leaks in PDF documents. Alarmingly, 46 percent are still relying on PDF file conversion to enforce their information security policies. Workshare Protect Enterprise unifies fragmented approaches to outbound content compliance, converting risky content to safe information, containing sensitive information within established perimeters, and controlling confidential content as it leaves the company over electronic channels. Only Workshare delivers this unique combination of integrated approaches to effectively prevent widespread privacy breaches, intellectual property leakage and inadvertent financial disclosure that often result from dirty and dangerous content. The entire suite consists of Workshare’s award-winning Protect client, installed at more than 1,000 organizations worldwide, the Workshare Policy Manager and the new Workshare Network Protect gateways—all of which work independently and together to deliver the right cure, at the right time, and in the right place without crippling existing business processes. Workshare Protect client: Workshare’s market leading and award-winning client allows for the creation and management of content security policy and educates users as it enforces this policy. Working both online and offline, the Protect client removes risky content, converts information to appropriate formats and applies content rights. Rather than simply stopping business, Protect’s rich client warns and educates users in real-time about sensitive information and, if authorized, lets them decide how to treat the content. Workshare Network Protect: Workshare’s new network channel gateways provide IT security staff with visibility and policy enforcement into content leaving the organization via network channels such as HTTP and SMTP. By deploying Network Protect, organizations can provide a robust last line of audit and control on outbound network traffic. Workshare Policy Manager: Workshare’s enhanced policy management offering provides a centralized policy management console for the creation and distribution of outbound content policy for both Protect client and Network Protect deployments. In addition, the Policy Manager delivers complete reporting and visibility into activity at both end-points and network egress points, and offers pre-packaged, customizable policy packs. The Workshare Protect Enterprise Suite’s Identity-based Routing monitors all business information, checking content, context and sender, recipient, channel and device identities. Protect automatically cures content by cleansing metadata, removing violations, encrypting emails, applying RMS rights, and converting to secure PDF—even delivering instant, real-time alerts to users as they work that signal dangerous data or actions that could violate internal policy or financial, privacy, discrimination and intellectual property regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, CASB 1386 and others currently enforced or under consideration worldwide.
