2010 Best Deployment Scenario

Sybase mobility solutions help improve US Army readiness

The U.S. Army is the branch of the United States Armed Forces that is responsible for land-based military operations wherever and whenever they are required. The US Army works with the U.S. Department of Defense to train and equip soldiers serving the nation. It is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military and is one of seven uniformed services. With geographical commands stationed throughout the world the U.S. Army endeavors to preserve the peace and security and provide for the defense of the United States the Commonwealths and possessions and any areas occupied by the United States.

Challenges: AWRDS was first developed 15 years ago for the Army's Depot Systems Command. It is an automated system designed to assist in the accountability inventory maintenance and transfer of APS assets to and from deploying soldiers. It was certainly an improvement over the previous method of tracking the location and condition of Army Prepositioned Stock (APS) but it did not eliminate paper pens and clipboards or the manual collection consolidation and sharing of data. The current version of AWRDS takes advantage of newer technologies to address earlier limitations of the system. It is now a 64-bit Windows-based application that runs on standard laptop PCs and can be deployed very quickly wherever it is needed to over 1000 users worldwide. Powerful handheld devices enable data collection via barcode RFID scanning and direct keyboard input. Ultimately AWRDS supports the daily maintenance of APS depots and provides real-time reporting and hand-off to soldiers.

Best Deployment Scenario - Asset Management Solution

Solution provided by Sybase Inc: Thanks to the availability and reliability of advanced mobile devices running powerful mobile database and data synchronization software 1- and 2-D bar code scanning and the ability to synchronize mission-critical equipment inventory and condition information across multiple locations in real time we've been able to continuously improve AWRDS to achieve optimal force readiness which is essential to our warfighters' safety and their ability to accomplish their missions.Data required for and collected by users is maintained in an onboard Sybase UltraLight database providing users with instant visibility to equipment stocks and condition at their locations. Equipment data can quickly and easily be shared with other depots and with regional and central ASC commands using Sybase's MobiLink data synchronization technology. The result is quicker more accurate data collection and availability which translates into near-real-time total asset visibility or a common operating picture (COP) as ASC calls it. This COP is accessible via the Web. AWRDS also enables users to view the condition of equipment so that if a piece of equipment is out of commission and spare parts are needed the urgency of getting those spare parts to the depot can be quickly escalated to the proper authority.

Summary: The tasks required to deploy and repatriate soldiers and equipment haven't changed in any fundamental way. The manner in which those tasks are performed however and the time required to perform those tasks have changed dramatically thanks to the use of advanced mobile and information management technology.
