Claus Kotasek: Ensuring safe, adaptive and flexible access to cloud applications and systems

SMS PASSCODE is a leading provider of adaptive multifactor authentication software, improving enterprise security and productivity by delivering an easy to use and intelligent solution that helps ensure the safety of corporate networks and applications. SMS PASSCODE authenticates users through their mobile devices with contextual intelligence, helping IT managers address evolving business needs with cloud applications and mobile security by dynamically authenticating users based on geo-location and data usage analytics.

Info Security PG: What are the common threats to cloud based applications?

Claus Kotasek: Data protected by usernames and passwords are at the mercy of brute-force attacks, phishing and outright theft. Organizations are advised to carefully consider the level of security provided by the cloud service provider before proceeding with a contract. With the level of security breaches today, it is not enough to employ simple user names and passwords to protect vital information in the cloud.

Info Security PG: Why do organization need adaptive multi-factor authentication? How does the authentication process work? How long does it take?

Claus Kotasek: Ultimately organizations need to know that their corporate data is safe at all times. Simple authentication in the form of username and password is no longer enough to keep the bad guys out. Recent research shows that 76% of all network breaches exploited weak or stolen user credentials. So the case for added security is clear, but at the same time IT departments are eager to add this extra layer of security but in a way that is as convenient as possible for their users, and that does not require too much time to administrate the solution by IT. Gone are the days where IT would simply hand out hard tokens to the workforce to solve the security issues around user authentication. Today there are much more intelligent solutions available that provide a higher level of security, and without making a tradeoff on user convenience. This is where adaptive multi-factor authentication comes in. SMS PASSCODE leverages the one thing users always carry with them – their mobile phone. Once the users’ credentials have been validated then he/she is prompted to enter an OTP (one-time-passcode) which is sent e.g. via SMS, voice-call, or secure e-mail. The solution takes full advantage of contextual information such as login behavior patterns and geo-location to assess the level of user authentication needed to stay safe. For even greater user convenience the solution can be configured to dynamically adapt the level of security based on e.g. where the users are located when logging in, what time they are logging in, and what network they are logging in from. For example, if the user is logging in from a trusted location such as the comforts of their home (where they have logged in from before), then they will not be prompted for an OTP in order to authenticate. We call this heightened security – when needed.

Info Security PG: What are the new features in the latest version of the SMS PASSCODE product? Why were they developed?

Claus Kotasek: With version 7.0 of our software we have introduced several enhancements and new features. SMS PASSCODE version 7.0 enhances convenience and flexibility for remote logins with contextual message dispatching and introduces secure device provisioning to reduce BYOD complexity by enabling self-enrollment of ActiveSync devices into the organization.
